EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases - Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) & Nocturnal Birds Surveys - [2010-2014]

Latest version published by EDP - Energias de Portugal on Mar 23, 2020 EDP - Energias de Portugal

The dataset contains records of the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) and other nocturnal birds of prey (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. A total of 32 acoustic sampling points was established along the lower Sabor river valley and in its main tributaries, which were visited each year in the peak of the species' breeding season (February) from 2010 to 2014. Data contains a total of 19 observation events of Bubo bubo (17) and Strix aluco (4).

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 554 records. 1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

  • Event (core)
    554
  • Occurrence
    320

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Title EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases - Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) & Nocturnal Birds Surveys - [2010-2014]
Identifier EDP Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for Bubo bubo in 32 sampling points along the lower Sabor river valley and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.
Design Description The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundance of Bubo bubo and possibly other nocturnal birds of prey in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam, from the intermediate phase of the construction to the reservoir filling period (2010-2014).

Sampling Methods

Acoustic sampling was performed at 32 count points, located in high ground near areas of favourable habitat for the Eagle Owl located along the lower Sabor river valley and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. Each sampling point was visited ± 3 hours around sunset, corresponding to the period of greatest daily vocal activity of the Eagle Owl. In each point, a period of spontaneous listening of vocal activity was performed ("SCP", 8 minutes), followed by the playback of the Eagle Owl call (3 minutes) and for a final period of listening to the potential response of the focal, and other species ("PPP", 10 minutes). The identification of the responses was made "in loco" by experienced observers.

Study Extent Data were collected in a 5-km buffer around the lower Sabor river valley and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro e Macedo de Cavaleiros.
Quality Control All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians
