Description

The dataset contains records of aquatic and riparian birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dam, from February 2010 to September 2014. Sampling was performed in selected points distributed along the lower Sabor river valley, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. The presence and identity of birds were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observation with binoculars and/or telescope. The records include taxa identified at the species or genus levels.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,254 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

The dataset contains records of aquatic and riparian birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dam, from February 2013 to September 2014. Sampling was performed in a total of 66 sampling points along the river Sabor (56 in the area affected by the dam, and 10 in areas upstream the reservoir). The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 1727 observation events. In total, 17 taxa were identified up to the species rank. The most common species (>100 individual records) were Phalacrocorax carbo (551 records), Alcedo atthis (333), Cettia cetti (300), Ardea cinerea (140) and Tachybaptus ruficollis (117).

Title EDP Baixo Sabor: Aquatic and Riparian Birds - Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases [2010-2014]
Identifier EDP Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS). The sampling was performed in suitable habitats for aquatic and riparian birds, in 1x1 km squares centered in the lower Sabor river valley, and from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.
Design Description The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of species of aquatic and riparian birds, with special attention to the Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and Dipper (Cinclus cinclus), in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam during the construction and the reservoir filling periods (2010-2014).

Sampling Methods

Sampling was designed to cover the whole valley of the lower Sabor river, in habitats suitable for aquatic and riparian birds (e.g, riparian galleries, fast-flowing stream reaches, stream pools), and particularly for the two focal species. A total of 66 point counts: 56 in "affected" areas (PRA) and 10 in "control" areas (PRAC) distributed in a grid of 1x1 km squares was set. At each count point, a 10-minute count session was performed, in which all birds detected by sight or sound were recorded. The identification was made "in loco" by experienced observers, with support of appropriate field guides.

Study Extent The data were collected in a single point located near the river in each 1x1 km square. Points were located in the lower Sabor river valley, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro e Macedo de Cavaleiros.
Quality Control All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians
