Description
The dataset contains records of nests of cliff-nesting species of high conservation priority, namely birds of prey and Black Stork (Ciconia ciconia) (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of nest surveys made in and around the area affected by the dam, from May 2010 to June 2014. Data consists of observations of all nests of the target species found in the study area, which were followed throughout the reproduction period (March-August) of each year. The records include the number of young produced by each couple in each year. The target species were Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Bonelli's Eagle (Aquila fasciata), Griffon (Gyps fulvus), Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopteris), Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) and Black Stork (Ciconia nigra). Additional species whose nests or potential nesting sites were also recorded, included Black Kite (Milvus migrans), Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo). Due to the vulnerability of nest site locations of these species, the precision of the geographic coordinates was degraded to 0.01, according to the recommendations of Chapman & Grafton (2008). The dataset with the original (undergraded) coordinates may be provided upon request by the resource contact from EDP, who will define the terms and conditions for its use.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,550 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams. The sampling was centered in the valley of the lower Sabor river and its tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the breeding population and productivity of cliff-nesting bird species of high priority conservation, particularly birds of prey and Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams, from the intermediate phase of the construction to the reservoir filling period (2010-2014). |

Sampling Methods
The dataset includes systematic observations of all nests detected in the breeding territories of each species. Nest surveys and assessment of the likelihood of breeding usage (confirmed, probable or abandoned) were carried out in potential nesting areas (according to the indicative behavior of adults) close to nesting cliffs. Active nests were monitored each year until the end of the breeding period, with the aim of determining the number of flying chicks for each detected couple. For each nest, records were taken of its approximate location in 1:25.000 military charts, and sun exposure, as North (N), South (S), East (E), West (W), Northeast (NE), Northwest (NW), Southeast (SE) and Southwest (SW). All identifications were made "in situ" with binoculars and telescope. Because most nests were inaccessible, observations were made from vantage points in the opposite bank. For this reason, the locations provided may either be approximate, or represent the observation point, rather than the nest coordinates.
Study Extent | The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower Sabor river and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros. |
