Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 228 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
- Event (core)
- Occurrence
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data
The dataset contains records of land birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal) and its main tributaries, in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in the upper Sabor sub-basin, outside the area of influence of the dams, from February 2010 to September 2014. Sampling was performed in rivers Maçãs and Angueiras (12 points). The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 228 observation events, corresponding to a total of 6905 records. The most abundant species (>400 records) were Fringilla coelebs (816 individual records), Turdus merula (662), Parus major and Delichon urbicum (450) and Ptyonoprogne rupestris (410).

Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor outside the area affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for land birds in 12 5x5 km squares centered in the Maçãs and Angueira rivers, tributaries of the Sabor, up to 60 km upstream the river’s mouth. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of bird species in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam, during the the construction period and flooding periods (2010-2014). This dataset includes observations in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, which served as controls to estimate the impacts of the Sabor Dams. |

Sampling Methods
Sampling was designed to cover the most relevant habitats for land birds in a buffer of 5 km around the lower reach of the Sabor river and its main tributaries. A total of 12 point counts were distributed in a grid of 12 5x5 km squares. At each count point, a 10-minute session was performed, in which all birds detected by sight or sound were recorded. The identification was made "in situ" by experienced observers, with the support of appropriate field guides.
Study Extent | The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Maçãs and Angueira river valleys, in the upper Sabor sub-basin, up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro e Macedo de Cavaleiros. |
