Description
The dataset contains records of Iberian Wolf (Canis lupus) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of spotlight counts made in and around the area affected by the dam, from June 2010 to September 2014. Sampling was performed at fixed transects (spotlight counts) distributed along the lower Sabor river valley and some of its small tributaries, and in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. The presence and identity of the target species would be assessed by direct observation of individuals during spotlight counts. No detection of Iberian wolf was obtained during these surveys, thus the dataset reports on locations where the species was deemed absent, thereby providing a baseline to assess future changes in species occurrence patterns.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 126 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The dataset contains the results of Iberian Wolf (Canis lupus) (Mammalia) surveys made in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), some of its small tributaries, and in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Surveys were made made in the area affected by the dam, and in control areas farther from the dam, from June 2010 to September 2014. Sampling was performed between May and November, with a total of 6-11 transects sampled each year. No detection of Iberian wolf was obtained during these surveys, thus the dataset reports on locations where the species was deemed absent, thereby providing a baseline to assess future changes in species occurrence patterns.
Title | EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases - Iberian Wolf [spotlight counts] - [2010-2014] |
---|---|
Identifier | EDP Biodiversity Data |
Funding | The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. |
Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams. The sampling was made in suitable reproduction habitats for Iberian Wolf, in a grid of 5x5 km squares established in the lower Sabor river valley and some of its small tributaries, ands in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to detect the presence of the target species and to monitor changes in its distribution patterns in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams during the construction and the reservoir filling periods (2010-2014). These surveys aimed to complement the traditional method of scat search, to provide direct evidence of species occurrence. After 2011, they ceased to be used throughout the study area, and they were limited to particular locations where the probability of obtaining positive contacts with the wolf was judged to be higher. |

Sampling Methods
In squares with potential (scats, attacks on livestock) or confirmed (photos) presence of wolf, spotlight counts were performed between May and November of each year. Counts were made at night, by driving a car slowly along road transects crossing habitats potentially suitable for wolves. Between 11 (2010-11) and 6-8 (2012-14) transects with a minimum lenght of 14 km (range: 14-23 km) were performed by two observers. At least one of the members of the team was equipped with a long-range spotlight. All terrain in front and to the sides of the car was systematically swept with the light source, which would be reflected by the eyes of any mammals they would meet with. Identification of any animal detected was to be made with the help of 10x50 binoculars.
Study Extent | The data were collected in a grid of 38 5x5 km squares established in the lower Sabor river valley, its tributaries, and in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros. |
