Description
The dataset contains records of amphibians (Amphibia) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2017) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the autumn of 2010-2012 (October to November) and in the spring of 2011-2017 (April to June) during field visits to 42 sampling points with favourable habitats within a 5-km radius buffer around the Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. The presence of individuals was assessed with dip-netting.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 336 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The dataset contains records of ambhibians (Amphibia) collected in plots along the lower Tua River and in Ferradosa stream (Douro sub-basin), included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between October 2010 and May 2017, during field visits to 43 sampling plots with favourable habitats for amphibians (tanks, ponds, rivers, streams) within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 2879 observation events. In total, 12 taxa were identified to the species rank. The most abundant species Bufo bufo (1233 observation events), Pelophilax perezi (963), Alytes cisternasii (226), Salamandra salamandra (136) and Triturus marmoratus (106).

Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river’s valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam, and in Ferradosa stream (Douros sub-basin). The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for amphibians (e.g., tanks, ponds, streams, rivers) found in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 45 km from the Tua mouth. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to monitor the habitat usage of amphibians in the autumn (October-November) and reproduction (April-June) periods, in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, prior to its construction (2010) and during the construction (2011-2015) and subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017). The Ferradosa stream was used as an control site, external do the Tua valley. |

Sampling Methods
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for amphibians (tanks, ponds, streans and rivers) in and around the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam, including the reservoir area. A representative sample of each habitat was chosen at a gradient of distance from the valley (in the reservoir, < 2 km, > 2 km). Each sampling plot was visited once or twice in autumn (October-November) of 2010 and 2011 and spring (April-June) of 2011-2017. All habitats were sampled with a dip-net for individuals (adults or larvae) of amphibians and all individuals detected were recorded. Each sampling event had a duration of 30 minutes, during which a variable area, depending of the habitat, was prospected. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.
Study Extent | The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 45 km from the mouth and in Ferradosa stream (Douro sub-basin), in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Alijó, Murça and Mirandela. |

Quality Control | The identification of the taxa seen or cpatured was performed by technicians with a high degree of expertise in this group of fauna. |
