EDP Foz-Tua: Dipper (Cinclus cinclus), River Tinhela (transects) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2012-17]

Latest version published by EDP - Energias de Portugal on Feb 18, 2020 EDP - Energias de Portugal

The dataset contains records of the Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) (Aves) and other riparian birds collected in the Tinhela river (Tua sub-basin) and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2012-17) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the winter of 2013 and 2017, and in the spring of 2012-2015 and 2017, during field visits to six transects located in the riverbed of the Tinhela river, both in the area affected by the dam, near the mouth, and upstream. All observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 49 records. 1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

  • Event (core)
    49
  • Occurrence
    294

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

The dataset contains records of the Dipper (Cinclus cinclus, Aves) and other riparian bird species collected in transects along the Tinhela river valley (a tributary of Tua river) and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and June 2017 during field visits to six sampling transects with favorable habitats for the Dipper. The occurrence of the target and associated taxa (riparian birds) was documented through 31 observations of Cinclus cinclus (7), Motacilla cinerea (18), Cettia cetti (3), Luscinia megarhynchos (2) and Alcedo atthis (1).

Title EDP Foz-Tua: Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) (transects) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2012-17]
Identifier EDP Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in the river Tinhela, in the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam (Tinhela mouth), and in areas upstream. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the Dipper in the riverbed of Tinhela river, up to 10 km from the mouth.
Design Description The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of the Dipper in the Tinhela river, an important area for this species in the Tua sub-basin, to assess the potential effects of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dan, during the dam construction (2011-2015), and during/after the flooding (2017).

Sampling Methods

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitats for the Dipper and other riparian birds along the Tinhela valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (the mouth) and upstream. A total of six line transects was established along the river Tinhela. All transects were sampled once in winter and 1-2 times in the reproductive period (spring), in the early morning or late afternoon. Each transect was walked on foot at a constant speed of 1-2 km/h and lasted no less than 30 minutes. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.

Study Extent The data were collected in the riverbeds of the Tinhela river (river Tua sub-basin) (Northeast Portugal), up to 10 km from the mouth, in the municipality of Murça.
Quality Control All identifications were performed by qualified technicians
