Description

The dataset contains records of the Macrophytes (i.e., aquatic and riparian plants) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and its tributaries, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2015) of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the spring 2011-2015 during field visits to 17 sampling points distributed along the valley of river Tua (Northeast Portugal) and its tributaries, up to the intersection with rivers Rabaçal and Tuela, 52 kms upstream. These data are part of a larger monitoring program in the river Tua basin to evaluate the impacts of the dam construction in the water quality of the river, before and during the construction process.

Project Data

The dataset contains records of Macrophytes collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and its main tributaries, within the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2015) of the Construction Phase of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in spring/summer (April-July) of 2011-2015, during field visits to 17 sampling plots located along the lower Tua valley and its tributaries, up to 52 kms upstream. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 32810 records of species presence and percentage cover. The most abundant species (> 500 m2 of area covered) were Alnus glutinosa (1270 m2), Salix salviifolia (1012) and Fraxinus angustifolia (799).

Title EDP Foz-Tua: Macrophytes – Ecological Monitoring Program [2011-2017]
Identifier EDP Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in the Tua river and its main tributaries, until the intersection with rivers Tuela and Rabaçal, up to 52 kms from the Tua mouth.
Design Description The objective of the study was to characterize dynamics of macrophyte communities, to indicate changes in the ecological quality of river ecosystems in the lower Tua sub-basin, along all the stretch affected by the dam and in several control points upstream, during the dam construction (2011-2015).

Sampling Methods

The sampling of Macrophytes was performed through the application of the sampling and analysis protocol for Macrophytes (INAG 2008) developed to assess the biological quality of rivers within the scope of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) application. Inventories were carried out at the selected locations in the shortest possible time, to increase the comparability of the results. The field inventory was based on the percentage coverage of each species in relation to the total area sampled (limited by the river corridor, defined by the limit of ordinary floods). The work was carried out along the watercourse, including submerged and emerged beds and embankments. The allocation of the surface cover of each species was determined by imagining the individuals of each taxon grouped in the same area, at one end of the sampling section, in order to facilitate the estimation of the percentage area. More specifically, the vegetation was inventoried in discrete 100 m longitudinal units. Taxa of unknown or doubtful identification were collected and identified in the herbarium. Given the importance of Bryophytes as bioindicators, these specimens of non-vascular flora were also collected and later identified by specialized technicians.

Study Extent The data were collected along the Tua lower valley and its main tributaries (Northeast Portugal), up to 52 kms from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Murça, Vila Flor and Mirandela
Quality Control All identifications were performed by qualified technicians
