Description

The dataset contains occasional records of Vertebrates (Reptiles, birds and large and medium-sized mammals collected in the lower valley of the River Tua, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-17) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between October 2010 and July 2017 in a non-systematic way, on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam. The dataset includes both "ad hoc observations" and observations of non-target species made in regular censuses of specific faunistic groups. The presence of individuals was recorded both by direct observations in the case of birds and reptiles and by indirect evidences (scats, camera-trapping) in the case of mammals.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 191 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Geographic Coverage

The data were mostly collected within a 5-km buffer around the valley of the River Tua (Northeast Portugal), up to 50 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Vila Flor, Murça and Mirandela. The dataset includes some samples collected outside this general area in waterlines of the Tua (municipality of Sabrosa) and Douro (municipalities of Tabuaço and S. João da Pesqueira) sub-basins.

Project Data

The dataset contains records of terrestrial vertebrates (reptiles, birds, large and medium-sized mammals) collected in plots along the lower Tua River, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between October 2010 and July 2017, in a non-systematic way within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley, and also in other places of the Tua and Douro sub-basins. The dataset includes both "ad hoc observations" and observations of non-target species made in regular censuses of specific faunal groups. The occurrence of the taxa was documented through 287 observations 191 non-systematic locations. In total, 29 taxa were identified to the species rank (13 reptiles, 13 birds and 3 mammals). The most abundant species (>20 individuals/signs of presence) were Lutra lutra (Mammalia, 50), Fringilla coelebs (Aves, 40), Psammodromus algirus (Reptilia, 37), Spinus spinus (Aves, 35), Acanthodactylus erythrurus (Reptilia, 21).

Title EDP Foz Tua - Terrestrial Vertebrates (occasional observations) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2011-17]
Identifier EDP Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua during the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the target species found in a 5-km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks, and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth.
Design Description The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of species of large mammals in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, prior to (2011) and during (2011-2016) the dam construction, and in the subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017). This dataset includes all observations of non-target species collected during specific faunistic surveys and/or "had oc" observatons.

Sampling Methods

No standardized sampling was used. All observations made outside the sampled points/transects used for and/or during surveys of other vertebrates were recorded and collected here. The identification and species assessment methods were those used for the regular surveys of the target groups: direct observations (birds, reptiles) or indirect indirect signs of presence, as scats, or observations of live individuals in camera-traps (mammals)

Study Extent The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley (Northeast Portugal) up to 50 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Vila Flor, Murça and Mirandela, plus some additional observations in S. João da Pesqueira and Tabuaço municipalities.
Quality Control All identifications were performed by qualified technicians.
