Описание

The dataset contains 63 records of Chiroptera species collected in continental Portugal and was published by Rebelo et al (2020)". Twenty-six bat species currently known for continental Portugal are represented including the first record of Myotis alcathoe for the country. Bat samples were collected under the scope of several projects spanning from 2005 to 2018. All bats were captured during mist-netting sessions or using harp-traps at roost exits. A non-lethal 3mm wing punch was collected from several individuals and stored in 96% ethanol from where DNA was extracted. The DNA barcoding of these samples was conducted within the InBIO Barcoding Initiative (IBI), funded by EnvMetaGen and PORBIOTA projects. DNA barcode sequences were deposited in BOLD (Barcode of Life Data System) online database. DNA extractions are deposited in the IBI collection at the CIBIO (Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources).

This dataset is composed entirely of data relating to 63 Chiroptera records. Sixty-three specimens were determined to species level. Overall, 26 species are represented in the dataset. These species belong to three families, the majority of which belong to the Vespertilionidae (21 species or 80.8%), with additional representatives from Rhinolophidae (4 species) and a single species in the Molossidae. Vespertilionidae also accounts for almost ninety percent (88.9%) of all collected samples, Rhinolophidae (9.5%) and a single sample was collected from the Molossidae family.

Данные проекта

The InBIO Barcoding Initiative aims to develop a reference collection of DNA barcoding sequences covering Portuguese taxa. Within the project, a special focus is afforded to insects, given their relevance to food webs, ecosystems functioning, high diversity and limited number of DNA barcoding sequences of interest.

Охват исследования Samples were collected in 31 different sites of continental Portugal. Sampling was conducted from 2005 to 2018. Most specimens (76.2%) were collected in the years 2013 and 2016.
Контроль качества To each sample the morphological identification was contrasted with the results of the Blast of the newly generated DNA barcodes in BOLD Identification Engine.

Описание этапа методики:

  1. Samples were collected from bats captured using mist-nets or harp-traps at roost exits and identified morphologically by experts. A non-lethal 3mm wing punch was collected each individual and stored in 96% ethanol from where DNA was extracted and COI DNA barcode fragment was sequenced. Prior submission to GBIF, data was checked for errors and inconsistencies with OpenRefine 3.2 (http://openrefine.org/).
