Description

The dataset contains 219 entries with 241 records of specimens from the families Limoniidae, Pediciidae and Tipulidae, collected between 1985 to 2019 in continental Portugal (Oosterbroek et al., 2020, part). All specimens have been identified to species level, in a total of 65 species representing 45% of the craneflies known for continental Portugal. Specimens were collected in 67 different localities. The dataset “Diptera 03 - Further records on Portuguese Limoniidae, Pediciidae and Tipulidae” is part of a group of DNA barcoding datasets of Diptera conducted within the InBIO Barcoding Initiative (IBI), two of which have already been made available through GBIF (“The InBIO Barcoding Initiative Database: Diptera 01”, https://doi.org/10.15468/q1bvt3; “The InBIO Barcoding Initiative Database: DNA barcodes of Portuguese Diptera 02 - Limoniidae, Pediciidae and Tipulidae”, https://doi.org/10.15468/f6256w). IBI is funded by the EnvMetaGen and PORBIOTA projects. Most specimens (142) are deposited in the IBI collection. Other specimens are deposited in the Collection Rui Andrade (Porto, Portugal, 76 specimens), the Hunterian Zoology Museum (Glasgow, U.K., 22 specimens) and in the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Zoology collections (Leiden, Netherlands, 1 specimen).

Couverture taxonomique

This dataset is composed of data relating to 241 Diptera specimens. All specimens were determined to species level. Overall, 65 species are represented in the dataset. One species has been further identified to subspecies level, Nephrotoma appendiculata pertenua Oosterbroek, 1978. These species belong to 24 genera unevenly distributed among three Cranefly families, Limoniidae (21 genera), Tipulidae (2 genera) and Pediciidae (1 genus). The family Tipulidae accounts for a higher number of collected specimens when compared with the Limoniidae, 139 and 101, respectively. However, Tipulidae is represented by a smaller number of recorded species, 30, when compared to the 34 species recorded for the Limoniidae.

Données sur le projet

The InBIO Barcoding Initiative aims to develop a reference collection of DNA barcoding sequences covering Portuguese invertebrate taxa. Within the project, a special focus is afforded to insects, given their relevance to food webs, ecosystems functioning, high diversity and limited number of DNA barcoding sequences of interest.

Titre The InBIO Barcoding Initiative Database: Diptera 03 - Further records on Portuguese Limoniidae, Pediciidae and Tipulidae
Identifiant InBIO Barcoding Initiative
Financement The InBIO Barcoding Initiative was funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No 668981 and by the project PORBIOTA - Portuguese E-Infrastructure for Information and Research on Biodiversity (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-022127), supported by Operational Thematic Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization (POCI), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER). The fieldwork benefited from EDP Biodiversity Chair, the project “Promoção dos serviços de ecossistemas no Parque Natural Regional do Vale do Tua: Controlo de Pragas Agrícolas e Florestais por Morcegos” funded by the Agência de Desenvolvimento Regional do Vale do Tua, and includes research conducted at the Long Term Research Site of Baixo Sabor (LTER_EU_PT_002). LPdS and SF were supported by individual research contracts (CEECIND/02064/2017, 2020.03526.CEECIND) funded by FCT. JS was funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic through institutional financing of long-term conceptual development of the Silesian Museum research institution (MK000100595).
Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche Specimens were collected in 15 of the 18 Administrative Districts of Continental Portugal, in 67 different localities.
Description du design Specimens in this dataset were collected in field work carried out between 1985 and 2019. Most specimens were collected in the years 2018 (59%) and 2019 (32%). Sampling was directed specifically for the sampling of Diptera using different methodologies. All specimens were morphologically identified.

Méthodes d'échantillonnage

The studied material was collected in 67 different localities from continental Portugal. Sampling was conducted between 1985 and 2019, although 91% of the records were made in the years 2018 and 2019. Specimens were collected by direct search and individual netting of specimens, by sweeping the vegetation with a net or were directly collected at light traps, using both UV and mercury vapor lights. Captured specimens deposited in the IBI reference collection were preserved in 96% alcohol. Some specimens previously preserved in alcohol were dry-pinned and labelled after identification.

Etendue de l'étude Continental Portugal.
Contrôle qualité Data was checked for errors and inconsistencies with OpenRefine 3.4 (http://openrefine.org/) before submission to GBIF.

Description des étapes de la méthode:

  1. Specimens were collected in 67 different localities of continental Portugal. Field work was carried out between 1985 and 2019, although 91% of the records were made in the years 2018 and 2019.
  2. Specimens were collected during fieldwork by direct search and individual netting of specimens, by sweeping the vegetation or were directly collected at light traps (using both UV and mercury vapor lights). Specimens deposited in the IBI reference collection at CIBIO (Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources) were preserved in 96% alcohol.
  3. All specimens were morphologically identified using the available literature. Identification sometimes required a closer examination of the terminalia, which were prepared by boiling in a solution of 10% KOH.
  4. Prior submission to GBIF, data was checked for errors and inconsistencies with OpenRefine 3.4 (http://openrefine.org/).
