Description

The dataset contains records of vascular plants collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal) in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A, subsequently (2021) transferred to Movhera Hidroelétricas do Norte, S.A., to assess the temporal dynamics of selected habitats of conservation relevance, before and after the dams implantation. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dams, from April 2021 to June 2023. Plant inventories were made along the lower Sabor river valley and in some tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.

Title Movhera Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases – Vascular Flora and Habitats: species from prioritary conservation habitats - [2021-2023]
Identifier Movhera Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by Movhera – Hidroelétricas do Norte, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in selected communities of conservation relevance in the lower Sabor river valley and some tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.
Design Description The objective of the study was to follow the temporal dynamics of selected communities of conservation relevance, concerning the species composition and abundance in areas directly or indirectly affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams, as well as appropriate control areas, during the second phase of the exploration period (2021-2023). A total of 184 sampling points (impact (“I”) and control (“C”, or “P14”)) were set up in the study area for the natural communities of holm oak, cork oak, boxwood, riparian galleries and nucleous of exotic species (2021-23), work fronts (2021-2022) and landscape recovery and reservoir margin areas (sampling introduced in 2023, following a decision of the competent environmental authority).

Sampling Methods

Sampling was designed to cover the whole valley of the lower Sabor river and some of its tributaries, according to the specific target (natural communities or areas of intervention). Plant inventories were performed at each site, once per season, depending on the respective flowering period, from April to June, encompassing beetween 14 and 20 work-days. They were carried out on samples of variable size, depending on its stratification (ie, the number of strata) and its linearity (riparian galleries are linear structures). In this way, samples from natural areas (holm-oak and cork-oak communities) and in disturbed/intervened areas (exotic-dominated communities, work fronts, landscape recovery areas and reservoir margins) were of 400 m2 (20x20 m), whereas those of boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) and riparian galeries, of 100 m2 (50x2m) irrespectively of the type of area. The entire floristic list was listed up to the taxonomic category of species or subspecies, and through visual estimates a degree of coverage was assigned to each cast member, in percentage. These data were used in the calculation of several structure and composition parameters (not recorded in this dataset, which deals only with the plant inventories. Coverage estimates are presented up to the minimum area equivalent to 1% (i.e. 4 m2 in plots of 20 m x 20 m and 1 m2 in those measuring 50 m x 2 m) and take a standard minimum value of 0.5% when the cover is less than 1%. Specimens of doubtful identification were collected and pressed between two sheets of paper for later identification and deposit in the Herbarium of Vila Real (HVR -according to Index Herbariorum codes -Thiers, 2010). A list was kept of all species RELAPE, as well as of invasive/infestant species in each inventory.

Study Extent The data were collected in 184 sites in the lower Sabor river valley, some of its tributaries from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros.
Quality Control All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians. In some cases the synonymy was changed since the sampling events, so a specific column with the accepted synonimy was added to reflect this.
