Project Data

The dataset contains records of Vascular Flora collected in the river Tua and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) and in the Complementary Measures Programs (PMC, Complementary Measure MC12I) of the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam (AHFT) promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A, subsequently (2021) transferred to Movhera Hidroelétricas do Norte, S.A. Data were collected in July 2021 during field visits to 24 fixed stations (12 “impact”, denoted with an “I” in the name, and 12 “controls”, denoted with a “c”). The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 193 records of species presence and percentage cover. The most abundant species (>1% of the total cover) are Populus x canadensis (5.8%), Alnus glutinosa (5%), Fraxinus angustifolia (4%), Rubus ulmifolius (2.3%), Salix alba (2.1%), Agrostis stonolifera (2%), Arundo donax and Paspalum paspalodes (1.2%), Cynodon dactylon (1.1%) and Urtica dioica (1%).

Title Movhera Foz-Tua: Vascular Fora – Complentary Measures Monitoring Program (MC12l) – Exploration Phase [2021]
Identifier Movhera Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by Movhera – Hidroelétricas do Norte, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the river Tua, above the area affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was performed in pairs of points located close to each other in the river Tua margins, 52km above the reservoir area
Design Description The objective of the study was to assess the efficiency of the reconstruction/regeneration of the riparian gallery performed in the banks of river Tua during the first phase of the Exploration Phase, in the framework of the Compensatory Measures Program (Compensatory Measure MC12i), using a pair of “intervened” and “control” sites nearby. This monitoring is performed every three years since its implementation in 2018.

Sampling Methods

Sampling was based on plant inventories in permanent 100 m2 sampling plots, with production of a floristic list and quantitative assessment of the degree of coverage (in percentage) and density (number of individuals per meter square, in a semi-quantitative scale) of vascular plants. However, only the percentage cover was used in this dataset. The Compensatory Measure MC12i was divided in three sub-measures: MC12i.1 (Removal of the invasive species Arundo donax), MC12i.2 (Consolidation of the riparian gallery) and MC12i.3 (Consolidation of the margins using ecological engineering methods). Each intervened point was attributed to one of the three sub-measures: MC12i.1 (denoted in the data as CVR1_i2 and CVR_i2), MC12i.2 (CVR2_i1 to i8) and NC12i,3 (CVR3_i1 – rockfill technique – and CVR3_i2 - braided with living branches). To each intervened point was attributed a “control” nearby, where no actions were taken.

Study Extent The data were collected along the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), 52km above the reservoir, in the municipalities of Vila Flor and Mirandela
Quality Control All identifications were made by qualified technicians
