Descrição
The dataset contains 11 records of Stag beetle (Lucanidae) species collected from 2015 to 2019 in continental Portugal. All specimens were identified to species level, and belong to 3 species of the Lucanidae (Coleoptera). Specimens were detected during fieldwork by direct search and stored in 96% ethanol. A tissue sample (a leg), was collected from each individual, from which DNA was extracted. The DNA barcoding of these specimens was conducted within the InBIO Barcoding Initiative (IBI), funded by EnvMetaGen and PORBIOTA projects. DNA barcode sequences available were deposited in BOLD (Barcode of Life Data System) online database. Preserved specimens and DNA extracts are deposited in the IBI collection at the CIBIO (Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources).
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Cobertura Taxonômica
This dataset is composed of data relating to 11 Lucanidae (Coleoptera) specimens. All specimens were determined to species level. Three of the four Stag beetle species known to occur in continental Portugal are represented in the dataset, with Dorcus parallelipipedus as the most represented species in the dataset, accounting for seven of the eleven specimens.

Dados Sobre o Projeto
The InBIO Barcoding Initiative aims to develop a reference collection of DNA barcoding sequences covering Portuguese invertebrate taxa. Within the project, a special focus is afforded to insects, given their relevance to food webs, ecosystems functioning, high diversity and limited number of DNA barcoding sequences of interest.

Financiamento | InBIO Barcoding Initiative is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under grant agreement No 668981 and by the project PORBIOTA — Portuguese E-Infrastructure for Information and Research on Biodiversity (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-022127), supported by Operational Thematic Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization (POCI), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER). The fieldwork benefited from EDP Biodiversity Chair, the project “Promoção dos serviços de ecossistemas no Parque Natural Regional do Vale do Tua: Controlo de Pragas Agrícolas e Florestais por Morcegos” funded by the Agência de Desenvolvimento Regional do Vale do Tua, the FCT project PTDC/ASP-SIL/30250/2017 - POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030250 and includes research conducted at the Long Term Research Site of Baixo Sabor (LTER_EU_PT_002). |
Descrição da Área de Estudo | Specimens were collected in five Portugal districts and a total of ten sites were sampled. Sampling was conducted from 2015 to 2019. |
Descrição do Design | Specimens in this dataset were collected in field work carried out between 2015 and 2019. Specimens were located by direct searches carried out during field work, which enabled the sampling of both live and dead specimens. |
O pessoal envolvido no projeto:
Métodos de Amostragem
Specimens were collected in ten localities of continental Portugal. Sampling was conducted between 2015 and 2019, by direct search. Collected specimens were identified using a binocular stereoscopic microscope and stored in 96% ethanol for downstream molecular analysis.
Área de Estudo | Specimens were collected in ten localities of continental Portugal. Sampling was conducted from 2015 to 2019, in several field work expeditions. |
---|---|
Controle de Qualidade | To each specimen the morphological identification was contrasted with the results of the Blast of the newly generated DNA barcodes in BOLD Identification Engine. |
Descrição dos passos do método:
- Sampling was conducted in continental Portugal from 2015 and 2019, and consisted in direct search. Specimens collected were stored in 96% ethanol. A tissue sample (leg) was removed from which DNA was extracted and the COI DNA barcode fragment was sequenced. Prior submission to GBIF, data was checked for errors and inconsistencies with OpenRefine 3.2 (http://openrefine.org/).
